learn moreRiverstown Medical Practice is situated in the village of Riverstown, Co Sligo. The Practice occupies a single floor building which is wheelchair and buggy accessible. Our Practice staff include Dr David Swann and Dr Niamh Wheeler. As we are a teaching Practice for the Sligo GP Scheme we usually also have a fully qualified Doctor who is a Registrar finishing their General Practice training. Our Practice nurse is Ciara O’Halloran, and our admin staff are Patricia McCormack and Fiona Brennan.
Please use the registration form in the useful forms section to register an interest in joining our Practice. You can either post the completed form to us or drop it in to reception.
Existing patients please register with our Patient App. This will allow you to request repeat prescriptions easily and all of your prescriptions will be saved so you can easily request them next time you log in, you can also use the messaging functionality to message us.
You can also use the Chatbot at the bottom right of the screen to make appointments or request sick certs etc.
To order a repeat prescription we request that you use the patient app to submit your order.
Riverstown Medical Practice is a General Practice that cares for individuals and families living in the vicinity of Riverstown in Co Sligo. We offer medical services to both public (medical card holders) and private patients.

Please advise Surgery staff if you have Respiratory or Covid symptoms prior to entering the reception area. This is to ensure the safety of other patients and staff. We may recommend you wear a mask, particularly at times when there are a lot of viral respiratory infections circulating in the community. We might also ask you to undertake a Covid antigen test as part of the diagnostic process.
David qualified from Trinity College Dublin and worked in St James’s Hospital. He subsequently moved to Sligo and completed the Sligo General Practice Training Scheme becoming a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners. He also completed the Diploma in Family Planning and a Master of Science degree in Family Medicine at Trinity College. He has an interest in chronic disease management, particularly cardiology in the community. He is a General Practice Trainer and is also involved in undergraduate training for both UCD and UCG. He is involved in various roles at the Primary Care/Hospital Interface. He first worked in Riverstown in 1996, becoming the Principal GP in 2000.
Dr Niamh Wheeler studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin and qualified in 2013. After working in Australia for 2 years, she returned to Ireland to complete her GP training. As part of this training she worked in Accident and Emergency, General Medicine, Psychiatry, Palliative care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics. She graduated from the North Dublin City GP Scheme in 2020. She has since worked in both Dublin and Sligo and has a special interest in Womens' Health and Palliative care. She has a certificate in contraception and provides Mirena/IUD and Implanon services. She joined the practice in 2021.
Ciara is our practice nurse since 2006 ! She is a registered general nurse and registered children’s nurse and has worked as a practice nurse since 1989.
Ciara is available by appointment all day Monday Tuesday Thursday and wed and Friday mornings.
She provides ecgs 24 bp monitoring , childhood vaccinations, phlebotomy, ear micro suction and is a registered smear taker on cervical screening programme. She also coordinates the cdm programme.
